In a new interview with WCCFTech, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi answered some questions about both the upcoming Switch 2 port of Remake and what the future holds for the remake trilogy. Apart from chatting about game-key cards again, Hamaguchi revealed that Rebirth was set to receive DLC at one point. The reason for the change in plans? Square Enix wanted to prioritize getting the third installment out as soon as possible.

The outlet asked if any kind of interstitial DLC for Rebirth was in the works similar to Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, to which Hamaguchi said, “There were definitely some ideas to create a Rebirth DLC and that was the plan at a certain point in time, but when we revisited this topic and we thought about what our priorities should be and what the fans are looking forward to the most.” Naturally, that meant the third installment in the remake trilogy, so it seems any potential DLC was nixed fairly early on.

As for that third game, will it receive DLC? “Once we release the third installment, there is the possibility of having a DLC for that third installment,” Hamaguchi stated. “With the conclusion of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, there’s probably going to be a much wider audience for Final Fantasy as a whole. Whether we bring another new DLC or a full title, that’s something we are actively considering.”

That type of planning also corresponds to any spin-offs, of which WCCFTech inquired about a standalone Queen’s Blood title. Hamaguchi reiterated that the third game is Square Enix’s main priority now and mentioned that the developers have not figured out a plan past that yet. “If there is enough demand, a solo Queen’s Blood title is definitely something we can consider,” Hamaguchi said.

Considering that Remake has not launched on other platforms just yet, it’s probably a bit too early to get any clear idea of what the final game will be. I would imagine that Rebirth will launch sometime next year for other platforms, though obviously with some distance from Remake’s release in January.
