20 years ago in Japan, one intrepid explorer on an intergalactic vacation crash-landed after a comet collided with his spacecraft. Today, the original Pikmin for the Nintendo GameCube celebrates its 20th birthday!

Well over two decades ago a man sat back on a warm day and watched insects in his garden. Among all of the bugs to be found in the natural area, a group of ants working in harmony caught the eye of the one and only Shigeru Miyamoto. The creator of Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda wondered… what if the ants were instead little people?

Miyamoto’s vision for a real-time strategy game inspired by the insect colonies later became the story of Captain Olimar and his escapades to recover the missing ship parts of the S.S. Dolphin. With the help of his new discovery, the Pikmin species, the inhabitant of Hocatate was able to make it home and see two more grand adventures, one spinoff, and three iterations of a fighting extravaganza alongside his new allies.

Happy birthday, Pikmin! May we gather your forces again for a fourth mainline entry soon…
