We’re only a few days away from the big reveal of Project Sonic 2017 at SXSW! What better time is there to bring back Sonic Sunday here at Nintendo Wire?

Sonic games have gone up and down in quality over the years, but one element that has never wavered is the music. Whether it’s classic 16-bit Sonic goodness or hard rock as Shadow tears through the streets, Sonic music has always remained catchy and memorable. Today, we’re counting down the five best Sonic the Hedgehog tunes from the Blue Blur’s long history.

5. His World (Sonic the Hedgehog 2006)

One of the only positives from Sonic ‘06 is the music, and the best offering from the soundtrack is the main theme itself. Kicking off the game with a cool violin riff, this song makes you feel like you’re about to enter a truly epic adventure. While that feeling couldn’t be further from the truth, it’s a memorable track that holds up to this day.

4. Sonic Mania (Sonic Mania Reveal Trailer)

Is this cheating? Maybe a little, but the song featured in the reveal trailer for the upcoming game is so catchy and engrossing it had to be included on this list. We were all hungry for new Sonic news at the time of this announcement, and this song just added to the epic reveal of Sonic Mania. The EDM beats and the way the trailer is matched up to this song have brought me back to this video countless times.

3. City Escape (Sonic Adventure 2)

No Sonic music ranking is complete without this tune. “Rollin’ around at the speed of sound” is a line etched into the minds of every true Sonic fan, and it’s all thanks to this song. Prominently featured in the first act of Sonic Adventure 2, the opening bassline provides a sense of nostalgia greater than any other song on this list.

2. Sonic Boom (Sonic CD)

A forgotten gem of a song from a forgotten gem of a game, the opening theme to Sonic CD sets the stage for one of the finest time travel games ever made. As one of the first vocal Sonic songs released, it’s an extremely exciting way to kick off Sonic CD. It’s as catchy as heck, too.

1. Reach for the Stars (Sonic Colors)

Sonic Colors was a very important game for the Sonic franchise, as it finally brought Sonic back to the limelight in a positive way. Sonic the Hedgehog games have always been about that feeling of freedom you get while blazing through levels at blistering speed, and no song captures the essence of Sonic the Hedgehog games quite like the main theme for Sonic Colors.

Make sure you come back next Sunday– we’ll be diving into all the new details for both upcoming Sonic games!
