Prior to the launch of the highly sought after McDonald’s Pokémon TCG Happy Meal promotion, fans of the Pokémon Trading Card Game were also looking forward to another promotion filled with Pokémon cards. Thanks to a leak, select General Mills cereals would come with a 3-card booster pack to celebrate Pokémon’s 25th anniversary. It was assumed that the promotion would debut on Pokémon Day, February 27th, but then…

Well, everything changed when the scalpers descended.

If you’ve been trying to find boxes of Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Lucky Charms, Cocoa Puffs, Trix, or other select General Mills cereal boxes and have been met with an empty store shelf, this is why. February 27th passed without an official announcement from The Pokémon Company (save for an acknowledgement on Twitter via a tweet posted by General Mills Cereal) despite the promotion being active. Yet, one look at eBay will tell you why:

It was this week that The Pokémon Company finally made the official announcement on their site:

If you’re looking for an excuse to eat delicious cereal for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the Pokémon Trading Card Game is dishing up the perfect opportunity. For a limited time, select General Mills cereals including Golden Grahams, Trix, Cocoa Puffs, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, and Lucky Charms will contain a special three-card Pokémon TCG booster pack. Each pack will contain one foil Pikachu card and two additional Pokémon. In total, there are 14 unique collectible cards—although the Galarian Ponyta card will only be available in family-sized cereal boxes at Walmart.

This mouth-watering opportunity to celebrate 25 years of Pokémon while eating your favorite cereal is only available for a limited time!

Hopefully, this posting delay means that more cereal boxes filled with these promo packs are on their way to store shelves and not onto eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, etc. Pokémon TCG, as a whole, has been hit hard, so much so that The Pokémon Company did announce they would be printing more cards. That might not extend to a “limited time” promotion such as this, but things can still change. After all, once restrictions were put in place to subdue the chaos borne from the Happy Meal Pokémon TCG packs, it’s been easier to get a pack or two for market price and not two to five+ times the price. The same thing could, hopefully, happen to these cereal boxes. After all, I don’t think the slogan “cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs” meant buying Pokémon cards to sell online.
