The run-and-gun classic Contra III: The Alien Wars has arrived in Europe as the next SNES Virtual Console title to hit the New 3DS.

Interestingly, Contra III was never released in Europe under that name. Instead it was called Super Probotector, and the human protagonists were replaced by robotic soldiers. This might be a good sign for a future American release, as that is likely the version being ported over. The game also marks the first third party SNES title to be released on the New 3DS, which hopefully opens the flood gates to even more classic releases in the future.

This western release of Contra III comes after Japanese players got a massive haul of it and many other SNES games earlier this week. Here’s hoping this means the west will see even more of these 16-bit classics in the weeks to come!

We’ll be sure to let you know when more SNES titles emerge.

Whether it’s an exciting new entry in a series long established or a weird experiment meant only for the dedicated, Tom is eager to report on it. Rest assured, if Nintendo ever announces Elite Beat Agents 2, he’ll be there.
